What is Pilates

Pilates is a total mind-body conditioning exercise programme. It is a safe, low-impact method of exercise which focuses on developing your core stomach and back muscles to create a stable centre from which you will develop posture, strength, tone and a more confident body image.

Our Pilates programme is based around a modified set of exercises initially developed by Josef Pilates over 100 years ago.

Pilates and your back
Research into back and neck pain has proven that rehabilitation of the core stabilising muscles reduces pain and prevents its recurrence. Improving your posture will not only make you feel good but also look good.

Pilates and pregnancy/post-natal fitness
Pilates is a safe and effective method of exercise to continue both during and after your pregnancy. As well as assisting your body in adapting to the changes and stability challenges that will occur through pregnancy. Pilates will aid relaxation, circulation, breathing control and flexibility. As physiotherapists we can incorporate womens’ health rehabilitation into any Pilates programme.

Pilates and sport
Pilates is used as part of any valuable sports training regime to improve fitness and performance. It plays an essential role in injury prevention and recovery and is used widely in elite sports medicine. Each sport and each individual have very specific requirements; therefore it is essential to follow a prescribed programme.

Many problems stem from postural, flexibility and strength issues. We can incorporate appropriate and specific physiotherapy exercises into your personalised programme.
